Volunteer Roles
Volunteers from diverse backgrounds join us for various reasons. We provide comprehensive training, support, and development opportunities, along with reimbursement for reasonable expenses.
Volunteer Roles
You don’t need specific qualifications, just a friendly attitude, respect for different views, and basic IT skills. Roles include adviser, assessor, receptionist, or information assistant. Most positions require good listening and writing skills. Our public-facing roles operate weekdays from 9:45 am to 5 pm.
Assessor
We will train you to:
assess clients’ problems via telephone and face-to-face and email
identify key information about clients’ problems
help clients find the information they need using our self-help booths
assess and agree the most appropriate level of service for that client
refer and signpost clients appropriately to suit their needs
enter details and monitoring information on to our computer system
The Assessor Training Programme is run 4 times a year in January, April, July and October.
Advisor
We will train you to:
interview clients
provide comprehensive advice to clients using our information system
calculate clients’ entitlements to benefits
formulate financial statements
help them negotiate with people such as creditors or service providers
draft letters
make telephone calls on behalf of clients
Research and Campaigns
Your role will be to:
Identify trends in client issues to find where policies and practices are causing problems.
Conduct research, including client surveys, to understand these issues in depth.
Organize campaigns to drive change, which may involve:
Writing press releases for local newspapers.
Contacting elected officials like local councillors.
Holding public awareness events.
Using social media for advocacy.
Participate in national campaigns with Citizens Advice, such as those related to Universal Credit.
Fundraising
Your role will include:
Researching new fundraising opportunities.
Organizing and managing fundraising events.
Creating materials or presentations to promote local Citizens Advice and raise funds at events.
